Cheers to the New Year!
Hooray! We made it through the hectic holiday season, filled with family, friends, and a full list of to do’s. January is quickly becoming my favorite time of year. It is commonly thought of as a time of planning and setting new goals, projects, and resolutions. For me, it has become a quiet time of relaxation. I generally find myself focusing all of my energy towards the next task and, with blinders on, I charge ahead. But running in with blinders isn’t always the best way to see where you’re going. I find it’s more beneficial for me to step back and review. That way it is easier to realize how much I have accomplished while getting to this point. Besides learning from my mistakes, it also sets a positive mood for the tasks ahead.
Preparing for Change
This month, I’ve been doing exactly that as I prepare The Looking Glass Craft to move forward in a more focused direction. This is going to mean big changes, as I take steps to redirect efforts towards my new goal, to start the journey of natural living. I am excited today, to share some of the changes you will start to see around the site and what these changes will do for YOU. At the end of this post are some great resources for focusing on your goals as well as a new recipe I used to celebrate the New Year and reward myself for taking steps towards my resolutions.
A Look Ahead
This year The Looking Glass Craft is first taking a step back, in order to move forward. The core goal of this business is to ‘See Things Differently’. Guiding people with simple ideas, encouraging them to step away from the faceless factory production of today. Teaching and providing them with resources in order to live a more natural life. Helping people focus on the way things used to be made, with care and love.
Start the Journey of Natural Living
I’m happy to announce that our goal this year is to dive into that journey, alongside you, our readers. We’ve all heard about the benefits of living a more natural life and the dangers of chemicals that are used in our everyday food and products. Yet faced with all of this information, how do we begin to make that change?
The reality is that all of us have limited time and limited finances, which many of the convenience products are trying to take advantage of. Living a natural lifestyle, free from these products and their harmful ingredients, is a large undertaking, but it does not have to be complicated. Change doesn’t happen immediately. It is a journey filled with small steps (and perhaps a few leaps) along the way. The important thing is to start somewhere.
Assess Where You Are
This month, The Looking Glass Craft will be redesigned to help YOU on the journey of living a healthier, more natural lifestyle. We embark on this journey together, moving along month-by-month ,towards the life we wish to lead. Start by reviewing your previous efforts this month and give yourself credit for the accomplishments you have already made. Perhaps you’ve started cooking more often at home instead of relying on pre-made convenience foods? Maybe you’re eating more local produce this year than in the past. You may have begun using vinegar-based cleaners to replace some of those toxic household chemicals, or started a small garden to grow some of your own foods. Take pride in any of the improvements you have already made and give yourself credit! You have already begun. If you haven’t made any real changes yet, don’t worry. Making the decision to live a healthier life is the true start of the journey.
Are you excited for a new year of growth and change? To help us embark on this journey together I am creating a free Get Started Guide to help you map out what that healthier, more natural future looks like to you. The Guide gives focus on simple actions you can take towards natural living and will be released next week. Sign up here to receive your free guide! We all plan, learn, and grow in different and unique ways, so I’ve assembled a list of resources to help you achieve your goals.

When setting my goals, I use a combination of these techniques. First I take time to clear my head and reflect. Then, with the help of these planning tools, I clearly map out the details for accomplishing my goals. Having a plan in place gets me inspired and motivated to jump right in! But I’ve found the most important part is to reward myself and enjoy my new resolution and the progress I’ve made so far. So without further ado, here is my exclusive recipe to help you say Cheers to the New Year and start the journey of natural living!
Spiced Eggnog Punch
The inspiration for this spicy seasonal punch came from a wonderful cookbook called The Irish Kitchen, that I received for Christmas. This book includes a festive recipe for Scaltin or Irish Milk Punch. The original recipe is made with Irish whiskey, milk and spices.I revised it to have a more seasonal flair.
Start out with 1 cup Milk and 1 cup Eggnog in a small saucepan. Blending the milk and the eggnog together gives this punch a delicious holiday finesse that provides a perfect end of the ‘eggnog season’, yet it’s not as thick as eggnog and makes a smoother drink that is not as heavy on your stomach. This could be made with milk alone, and would still be delicious (in this case use 2 cups Milk). Mix in ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg and ⅛ teaspoon of cinnamon. Heat the mixture slowly on the stove-top and whisk together to blend the spices. Don’t use a very high heat, or the milk will scald. Whisking the ingredients, as the mixture heats, will create the milk foam on top that makes this drink classy, without the use of any fancy equipment! When the mixture is heated (but not boiling) remove from heat and pour in ¼ cup of Fireball Whiskey.
Fireball’s intense cinnamon flavor gives this drink an extra kick, but is balanced out by the eggnog so it’s not overpowering. For a different type of kick you, could substitute a few shots of espresso or dark roasted coffee instead of the fireball and doubling the cinnamon for flavor. Don’t forget to sprinkle a little extra nutmeg on top! This simple-to-make recipe is an elegant delight and perfect for a festive get together with family and friends this winter.
- 1 cup Milk
- 1 cup Eggnog
- ¼ teaspoon Nutmeg
- ⅛ teaspoon Cinnamon
- ¼ cup Fireball Whiskey
- Mix Milk, Eggnog and Spices together in a small saucepan.
- Heat slowly over a low flame, whisking continuously.
- When mixture is hot, but not boiling, remove from heat and add Fireball Whiskey.
- Serve in individual mugs and sprinkle with nutmeg.
