Natural Hair Care

The Problem With Modern Hair Care

Today you can find an overwhelming amount of hair care products on the market. Products for cleaning, softening, straightening, curling, and coloring hair. Even products to repair the damage caused by all the other products. It’s perfectly normal to use these chemical filled products on a daily basis, thinking that they help our hair look good, but then we wonder why our hair is too flat, too frizzy, too dry, too oily, damaged, or thinning. Unfortunately the products we use to look our best are often not helping our hair to be it’s best. We start to think that our hair is just “unmanageable” and that we need all these products to help make it better. Today I want to show you the problem with modern hair care and how natural hair care could be the solution for you. We all know things like hair dye and excessive heat can damage our luscious locks, but the real trouble runs much deeper than that. If you think that by not coloring or chemically treating your hair, you are avoiding this damage then you need to know about this. Because this issue goes all the way to the foundations of hair care, to even the shampoos and conditioners we use everyday. This is a revolutionary look at the way we take care of ourselves and our hair.

Shampoo and Conditioner

The very basics of hair care, shampoo and conditioner, are not what most people think of as a hazard to your hair’s health. The actual reality of most shampoos and conditioners on the market today is really quite alarming. Most of these products will lure you in with promises of making your hair picture perfect while skipping out on truly informing you on the ingredients. Unfortunately that is because instead of using more natural hair care ingredients those are artificial chemicals that strip your hair of its natural oils, which nourish and protect the hair, then replace them with poor substitutes when your hair is at its most vulnerable, giving the false illusion of “fixing” the hair.  These are toxic chemicals and artificial ingredients that we are talking about here. Chemicals that will absorb into hair follicles and make their way into your body. Everything in our body is connected and what you put on your skin, hair, and even nails can end up in the rest of your system as well. That is what makes these artificial ingredients in personal care products so dangerous!

In addition to these chemicals unknowingly being laden onto the body by these marketed “safe” products, your hair itself is on a roller coaster, because the natural balance has been upset. It is understood that no one wants their hair to be oily or greasy feeling, but also not dry or brittle either. However it is not really told or taught to the general public to stop using the products that may be causing this reaction in your hair or to switch to a more natural hair care solution, instead a new product will then hit the market designed to combat these problems. Convenient right? Buying into these chemical quick fixes only prolongs the damage to hair. Think of it this way, maybe your hair is extra greasy today because it is trying to replace all of its natural oils it has been stripped of? The natural oil that your body produces is called sebum. It is made to nourish and protect your hair. When there is a buildup of sebum on the scalp and surrounding area of hair, your hair will look and feel greasy. These commercial shampoo strip the sebum away from your hair and scalp, drying it out and creating the need for a conditioner and other products to moisturize your hair. When the scalp is stripped of all it’s sebum, it goes into over-production mode, because your hair needs sebum to be healthy. This causes more oil to build up around the scalp faster, creating the need to wash your hair every day or two. It’s a vicious cycle or drying your hair out, striping its natural protection and nourishment, then replacing it with artificial chemicals that can wreak havoc throughout your body.

So is there a way out of this damaging cycle?  Of course there is. In fact the first commercial shampoo was created in the 1930’s, not even a century ago. Several decades ago, it was not the norm for people to wash their hair with commercial shampoos at all! This is a fairly recent change in human history. That being said we didn’t just have greasy dirty hair everyday for the thousands of years before that. There is a way to care for your hair, naturally. Thankfully several ways in fact, depending on what feels comfortable for you. You could go a completely homemade, all natural route through a “No Poo Method”.  There is also more modern approaches to no chemical hair care, through being a savvy label reader and armed with the knowledge you need to find natural hair care products that work with your hair instead of against it.

Chemicals in Your Products

One of the first things you need to know before starting a natural hair care journey is what to avoid. The list goes on and on, but for now I will cover the basics.  Starting with teaching you how to research ingredients you don’t recognize. This is the first step in learning which products are safe and which should be avoided at all costs. The most used harmful ingredient found in many shampoos and conditioners is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. This is what makes your shampoo so ‘soapy’. Sodium lauryl sulfate causes shampoo to suds and bubble. This has been portrayed to us in the media over and over again to be the picture of washing your hair. Unfortunately it is also an insecticide that is known to cause liver damage,  skin rashes, eye damage, and can even contribute to depression. It has also been linked to causing cancer throughout the body. And if that isn’t bad enough the scary thing here is that you will find Sodium Lauryl Sulfate all throughout your home, once you know to look out for it. It is commonly in dish soap, laundry soap, body wash, face cleansers, the products you use every day on yourself and your family.

This is a difficult chemical for some people to eliminate because we have been trained by society and most media to think that bubbles = clean. That is not the case. When switching to products without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, one of the first things you will notice is that these products do not suds up like you are used to. There will be small bubbles, but no handfuls of artificial foam. And though that aspect may take a little time to get familiar with, you will feel just as clean without the cancer causing chemical that created the foam in the first place. So remember this new rule;

No bubbles= clean and safe!

The second red flag is the simple word ‘Fragrance’. While this sounds harmless, just something to make your shampoo smell nice, it is actually a masking term that companies use to avoid telling you what is in your products. Please remember that Fragrance is not an ingredient, then what is it? It is a category of combined chemicals, hundreds of chemicals, that are unregulated, unstudied, and cause unknown amounts of damage to your body and vital systems. I have found myself asking, How are they allowed to do this? Shockingly companies are not required to report what chemicals they are using so long as they can fall into the Fragrance category. Even though many of these chemicals have been shown to disrupt the endocrine system, clog the lymphatic system, and cause a buildup of damage to organs throughout the body. If a company isn’t comfortable telling you what they use for a “Fragrance” then it probably isn’t  safe and they shouldn’t be using it.

There are many other dangerous ingredients and toxic chemicals to be aware of in your products. So many that I cannot create an all inclusive list. What I can do is help you learn to look for the dangers and find a more natural hair care. Take a look at the ingredient list on the back of your current product and type in a google search “dangers of (This ingredient)” Download the free app on your cell phone called “Think Dirty” which can scan a product’s barcode to identify “dirty” or hazardous ingredients. If you can’t pronounce it, type it in. Share here on the comments or on our facebook page ( what hazardous chemicals you find. This way you have a community, together searching for what is safe, sharing what isn’t, and going forward on this journey towards natural living.

What Is A Toxic Ingredient?

As you read through this you may be thinking, “Well, I’ve used shampoo all my life and haven’t developed a rash, had major organ shutdown, or gotten cancer. So are these ingredients really toxic?” Unfortunately yes, yes they are. What many people think of when they hear “Toxic” is a violent and immediate reaction. Something gets on or in the body and you must be rushed to the hospital or call poison control right away. This would be an Acute Toxic Reaction. Which means the symptoms are sudden and severe. While these reactions are certainly scary and dangerous, for the most part this is not the type of reaction people exposed to “Toxic” chemicals experience. Understandably, because there is no sudden reaction to these chemicals, people assume that they are harmless. This is where the real danger lies, everyday small amounts of these chemicals entering your body and start to build up in your system. They cause a little damage here, a small blockage there. The body catches some of them and filters them out, only to be exposed to them again and again. They cause small troubles here and there, but your body fights and negates most of the damage at first. So it is normal to keep using these slow damaging products and be none the wiser to your bodies inner battle. While the damage to your body compounds there is a continual chemical build up in your system. The kidneys will become overworked trying to filter out the toxins. Eventually systems start to malfunction in strange ways because of these chemical build ups and they reach a point where your body cannot counteract it.

The damage of these chemicals may not be apparent, maybe even for years, but they are building up even now in small ways you may not notice. Perhaps you become drained of energy, muscles feel strained, have trouble focusing or struggle with bouts of depression and sadness. These are the immediate symptoms and warning signs of a toxin ladened body. Since we as a society are using these chemicals everyday, it has become accepted as the ‘norm’ to feel this way. You think, well everyone I know is tired and overworked, struggles with sadness and inability to focus. We start to think “That’s just the way life is”. I’m here to say that we were not meant to live that way. When you start eliminating toxins from your life and start using more natural hair care and natural products in general the change that takes place is amazing. Most people don’t even realize how badly they were being affected by these chemicals until they experience life without them. Even if we have been raised with these products and chemicals since being babies. Or we are using them on our children and families without knowing the danger and damage being caused. It is not too late! We see health problems skyrocket and once enough people have them we begin to think that these problems are normal. They are not. When you eliminate the chemicals you eliminate the toxic weight that is holding your body down.

So What Do I Do With My Hair?

To avoid the chemicals there are several natural hair care routes you can take. If you want to go all out with a DIY hair care lifestyle you can totally rock some “No Poo” hair without ever touching shampoo or conditioner again! Crazy I know, but it’s true and it works. My recommendation for this route is to check out the “No Poo Method” by Ashlee Mayer. This is the ultimate detailed guide on how to care for your hair completely without store bought products. Did you know that by simple brushing the sebum through your hair (with a horse hair style brush) the locks will absorb this natural oil that was made with exactly what YOUR hair needs. It will eliminate the buildup of oils around the scalp and cause the lower parts of your hair to be better nourished, soft, and strong. It takes a few months of transition for your body to adjust to this, which is where her awesome recipes for natural hair care and DIY shampoo alternatives come in handy! She teaches you about Natural Dry Shampoo (not the chemical filled stuff in a spray can!!) Applesauce Hair Masks (which can help eliminate toxic build up) and Natural Deep Conditioning Treatments (like warm coconut oil) to restore moisture to your hair when you need it most.

If this sounds a bit too intense for you, no worries! You can actually keep a normal hair care routine by simply switching to a non-toxic, organic alternative. The main thing to remember here is to CHECK THE LABEL! In the U.S. many products that can be labeled “Natural” or “Organic” may still contain harmful ingredients. My recommendation for this is to go with a company that has proven levels of integrity and uses only natural, plant based ingredients. I’ve tried several different companies for this, but one stands out above all the rest. Young Living Shampoos and Conditioners are the only ones I will use now. They are more effective than other ‘natural’ shampoos and conditioner I have tried, and contain NO harmful ingredient. Young Living is an amazing company that produces natural lifestyle products infused with the best quality essential oils. They have amazing standards of quality and integrity that I have simply never found in another company.

For my personal natural hair care I use a mixture of both these methods. I love creating natural conditioners and serums for my hair, but like the convenience of a traditional shampoo and conditioner. By using Ashlee’s No Poo Method I can work with the sebum my body produces, going longer between washes for my hair than before, while keeping my hair healthier than it ever has been.

Young Living For An Active Lifestyle

Young Living For An Active Lifestyle

Caring For Yourself

Trying to carve out time for our health can be a real struggle in the world we live in. You know that taking care of your body matters, it’s what keeps you going. But between work, family, chores, activities, and responsibilities, it takes a real commitment to make time to care for yourself as well.

In recent years we are seeing more and more cases of everyday products being detrimental to our health. As someone who knows the value of your health, how can you ensure that the products you’re using are helping you stay in that place of wellness you’ve dedicated so much time to?

How can you be confident in your products without spending hours either creating them yourself or researching every artificial ingredient in the world and how to avoid them? What you need is an effective, all-natural solution that’s convenient for you. You need Young Living for an active lifestyle.

Seed To Seal

What Is Young Living

Young Living is an Essential Oils company that has really become a natural lifestyle company. They use only 100% organic (and in most cases, better than organic) products. These products are made from plant based materials and use the natural properties of these plants to support the various systems of your body. They never use plants grown with pesticides and absolutely no artificial chemicals anywhere in the process. They call this standard of integrity “Seed to Seal.”

This is so important because even some products that are marketed as pure, natural, or organic can contain some toxic items within them. You can scan your products at home or on the store shelf to see how even the ‘organic’ brands measure up using the “Think Dirty” app for your smartphone. Then learn more about the better than organic standards at Young Living as well as the process they use and the purity of their products on the website

The Dangers In Commercial Products

At this point some of you may still be wondering “But what’s wrong with the products I’ve always used? Could they really be THAT bad for me?” To answer this I’d like to take a look at one of the most common products we use when we are out playing, exercising, or just going about our lives. Sunscreen. If you’re outdoors for long periods of time you probably use sunscreen to keep your skin healthy amidst all those rays. If you have children sunscreen is especially important to protect their delicate skin.

Most people don’t realize that sunscreen typically contains ingredients that act as “penetration agents” to help the product adhere to your skin. This unfortunately means that your body more readily absorbs the toxic chemicals contained in that product. According to the EWG (environmental working group) website “many sunscreen chemicals are absorbed into the body and can be measured in blood, breast milk, and urine samples”

What about the other products we use as we’re out and active? Bug spray can keep away mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, but they can also contain DEET and Permethrin. DEET can impair cellular function in parts of your brain and has been found to be a behavior modifying chemical. Permethrin is a neurotoxin, meaning it can kill brain cells. It is also damaging to the environment as it can harm cats, bees, and all forms of aquatic life. These are just some of the products you may be reaching for before you go out.

Cool Azul Pain Cream

There Is A Better Way

Now what if you could take all those toxic chemicals and replace them with something that is beneficial to your body instead. That’s exactly what Young Living has done. Their Mineral Sunscreen Lotion protects against UVA and UVB rays and is naturally derived from plant and mineral based ingredients.

Their Insect Repellent is clinically proven to repel mosquitoes and other tiny invaders using only 100% naturally derived, plant based ingredients. They also have Cool Azul Pain Cream which provides relief from muscle and joint aches, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains. Its an effective and natural alternative to medicated pain creams or “over the counter” sports gels, which use artificial ingredients and petroleum.

They carry a complete Active & Fit Kit which contains Cool Azul Sports Gel (made from organic plant based ingredients) and five essential oils that provide aromatic and topical support to help you do your best when you’re at the gym or after a long day of activity. These include Peppermint with it’s invigorating aroma that helps you wake up and get moving. R.C. to support your respiratory system and keep you breathing easy. Deep Relief with it’s soothing, cool sensation during or after a workout (or a long day). Thieves to help support your immune system and leave you with #noexcuses to not give today your all. As well as Copaiba which works with your body system to ensure they are all operating in harmony.

Active and Fit Kit

Make It Happen

You already dedicate time and energy towards your health everyday.  The next step is to start using products that support the level of wellness you’ve worked towards, instead of taxing your body and setting you back. There are four starter kit options to choose from so you can pick the experience that will best support your journey of wellness.

The first is an Essential Oils Starter Kit, this comes with 11 of the best oils to get you going and your choice of diffuser. The second option is the NingXia Starter Kit, which focuses on nutritional support for your body through our powerful antioxidant drink.

You can Create Your Own Starter Kit using the products we discussed here today that will help support your active lifestyle or any products you choose to help replace those toxins in your life with something better.

Local Raw Honey

Local Raw Honey -The secret weapon to fight seasonal allergies, naturally.

Do you suffer each year from itchy eyes and runny nose? Are you dreading those first blooms of the Spring or the harvest each Fall? Most people experience some form of seasonal allergies ranging from a minor discomfort to a more extreme reaction. While over-the-counter allergy medications may provide relief, these pills also come with a slew of side effects. Drowsiness or anxiousness can affect your daily routine and impair your livelihood. That a daily allergy pill also adds one more set of pharmaceuticals and unnatural chemicals into our bodies and our lives. Fortunately Mother Nature has already provided us with a valuable resource that can help fight seasonal allergies. Local Raw Honey.

Beecher Bees Local Raw Honey

Most peoples already know that bees produce honey from the nectar and pollen they gather from local plants and flora. This means that honey contains enzymes for breaking down the nectar and pollen of these plants. When you eat raw, local honey, you are ingesting the pollen from these plants, in a broken down form. The pollen is no longer active so it doesn’t cause a reaction, and your body gets used to the pollen being in your system. After some time, your body will react less harshly to that pollen in your environment, thus reducing your seasonal allergy symptoms. Local raw honey, then works like a natural vaccination against the allergens.

Raw Honey

However, in order for this natural allergy treatment to work, you must use local, raw honey. Unfortunately, when you walk through your grocery store, some of those jars labeled honey, may contain little or no actual honey. A quick look at the label will show you that many of the generic honeys from large companies are mostly made up of artificially flavored corn syrup. Real honey is one of the few things in nature that can truly last forever. It has an almost indefinite shelf life and therefore, needs no preservatives or additives. Make sure your honey is just honey. Raw honey has not been as heavily processed as regular honey, which is important if you want to fight seasonal allergies. Overprocessing will kill the enzymes which help neutralize reactions to plant pollen. Unfiltered honey is even better, as this type of honey will contain higher amounts of pollen.

Hansen's Honey Local Raw Honey

Local Honey

The last important criteria for your honey is that it must be local. Wildflower honey from Hawaii is delicious, but it will not help me in the Midwest to fight seasonal allergies. That’s because the local flora in Hawaii is very different than the plants in the Midwest. Local bees are using the plants in your area to make their honey, so the benefits are specific to those plants. There is no specific rule for how close the honey must be, in order to be considered local. Generally, the closer the better. However, as long as the area contains similar plants, the honey should be effective. To help you find honey near you, I’ve compiled a directory of local honey suppliers. Click to access this free resource and find honey in your area.

Local Raw Honey

Using Your Local Raw Honey

Now that you’ve got your local raw honey, how do you use it to help fight seasonal allergies? While there is no specific amount, as little as 1 tablespoon a day can help you start to build up a tolerance to local pollen and reduce your allergy symptoms. A spoonful in your morning coffee or nightly tea is an easy way to incorporate honey into your diet. But as a natural sweetener and healthy alternative to refined white sugar, honey can be used in almost anything. From smoothies, to baking, once you start to experiment, you’ll be surprised at how often honey can replace sugar or other sweeteners in your cooking. As an added bonus, you’ll be removing one more processed ingredient from your kitchen and replacing it with a natural alternative. Honey is also sweeter than sugar, so you will use less to achieve the same effect.

Responsible Use

A word of caution, remember that children under 1 year old should never be given honey. Those with severe or life-threatening allergies should always consult a doctor before trying a new remedy. This article is meant to educate and advise. Always use your own judgement for your specific situation.

Cheers to the New Year!

Hooray! We made it through the hectic holiday season, filled with family, friends, and a full list of to do’s. January is quickly becoming my favorite time of year. It is commonly thought of as a time of planning and setting new goals, projects, and resolutions. For me, it has become a quiet time of relaxation. I generally find myself focusing all of my energy towards the next task and, with blinders on, I charge ahead. But running in with blinders isn’t always the best way to see where you’re going. I find it’s more beneficial for me to step back and review. That way it is easier to realize how much I have accomplished while getting to this point. Besides learning from my mistakes, it also sets a positive mood for the tasks ahead.

Preparing for Change

This month, I’ve been doing exactly that as I prepare The Looking Glass Craft to move forward in a more focused direction. This is going to mean big changes, as I take steps to redirect efforts towards my new goal, to start the journey of natural living. I am excited today, to share some of the changes you will start to see around the site and what these changes will do for YOU. At the end of this post are some great resources for focusing on your goals as well as a new recipe I used to celebrate the New Year and reward myself for taking steps towards my resolutions.

Time to Reflect

A Look Ahead

This year The Looking Glass Craft is first taking a step back, in order to move forward. The core goal of this business is to ‘See Things Differently’. Guiding people with simple ideas, encouraging them to step away from the faceless factory production of today. Teaching and providing them with resources in order to live a more natural life. Helping people focus on the way things used to be made, with care and love.

Limited Resources

Start the Journey of Natural Living

I’m happy to announce that our goal this year is to dive into that journey, alongside you, our readers. We’ve all heard about the benefits of living a more natural life and the dangers of chemicals that are used in our everyday food and products. Yet faced with all of this information, how do we begin to make that change?

The reality is that all of us have limited time and limited finances, which many of the convenience products are trying to take advantage of. Living a natural lifestyle, free from these products and their harmful ingredients, is a large undertaking, but it does not have to be complicated. Change doesn’t happen immediately. It is a journey filled with small steps (and perhaps a few leaps) along the way. The important thing is to start somewhere.

Steps of Change

Assess Where You Are

This month, The Looking Glass Craft will be redesigned to help YOU on the journey of living a healthier, more natural lifestyle. We embark on this journey together, moving along month-by-month ,towards the life we wish to lead. Start by reviewing your previous efforts this month and give yourself credit for the accomplishments you have already made. Perhaps you’ve started cooking more often at home instead of relying on pre-made convenience foods? Maybe you’re eating more local produce this year than in the past. You may have begun using vinegar-based cleaners to replace some of those toxic household chemicals, or started a small garden to grow some of your own foods. Take pride in any of the improvements you have already made and give yourself credit! You have already begun. If you haven’t made any real changes yet, don’t worry. Making the decision to live a healthier life is the true start of the journey.

Get Started

Are you excited for a new year of growth and change? But I’ve found the most important part is to reward myself and enjoy my new resolution and the progress I’ve made so far. So without further ado, here is my exclusive recipe to help you say Cheers to the New Year and start the journey of natural living!

Spiced Eggnog Punch

The inspiration for this spicy seasonal punch came from a wonderful cookbook called The Irish Kitchen, that I received for Christmas. This book includes a festive recipe for Scaltin or Irish Milk Punch. The original recipe is made with Irish whiskey, milk and spices.I revised it to have a more seasonal flair.

Spiced Eggnog Punch
A festive drink with a burst of cinnamon and smooth eggnog flavor.

Start out with 1 cup Milk and 1 cup Eggnog in a small saucepan. Blending the milk and the eggnog together gives this punch a delicious holiday finesse that provides a perfect end of the ‘eggnog season’, yet it’s not as thick as eggnog and makes a smoother drink that is not as heavy on your stomach. This could be made with milk alone, and would still be delicious (in this case use 2 cups Milk). Mix in ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg and ⅛ teaspoon of cinnamon. Heat the mixture slowly on the stove-top and whisk together to blend the spices. Don’t use a very high heat, or the milk will scald. Whisking the ingredients, as the mixture heats, will create the milk foam on top that makes this drink classy, without the use of any fancy equipment! When the mixture is heated (but not boiling) remove from heat and pour in ¼ cup of Fireball Whiskey.
Fireball’s intense cinnamon flavor gives this drink an extra kick, but is balanced out by the eggnog so it’s not overpowering. For a different type of kick you, could substitute a few shots of espresso or dark roasted coffee instead of the fireball and doubling the cinnamon for flavor. Don’t forget to sprinkle a little extra nutmeg on top! This simple-to-make recipe is an elegant delight and perfect for a festive get together with family and friends this winter.
